Atlanta GA -- Michael Coles, candidate for United States Senate, today responded to a Coverdell television advertisement that depicts the incumbent Senator as someone who “can win the drug war.” “Although he claims to be working on the drug problem, it seems that Paul Coverdell only fights the war on drugs during election season,” stated Coles. “Coverdell was elected in 1993, and now just two months before the election, he introduces his drug plan.” “During his six years in the Senate, Coverdell has sponsored only four pieces of legislation that were enacted into law none of the four had anything to do with drugs,” 1 said Coles. “Coverdell claims to be leading the fight against drugs, but his record speaks otherwise,” stated Coles. “Paul Coverdell was one of only 20 Senators to vote against the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1994, which now provides $655 million a year in federal funding to establish, operate and improve local programs of school drug and violence prevention.”2 “Coverdell’s bill is still sitting in the Senate Judiciary Committee, and is unlikely to be voted on before Congress recesses on October 9,” continued Coles. “Coverdell knows his plan will not become law anytime soon, that’s why he hasn’t even bothered to propose a way to pay for it.” “Coverdell would rather play politics than actually address the drug problem,” said Coles. “Last June, he attached his drug plan to tobacco legislation and then turned around and voted against that legislation,” stated Coles. “If Paul Coverdell worked as hard on the drug problem as he has on promoting himself, we might actually have an effective drug policy in place.” _____________________________ |
