Atlanta, GA - Today, Michael Coles, candidate for United States Senate, responded to a new Coverdell campaign television commercial sponsored by the Business Roundtable. The ad, which features a group of babies in a crib, attempts to portray Coverdell as a friend of children and a proponent of health care reform. “Given his record on health care and education, it is appalling that the Business Roundtable would attempt to pander to Georgia families when Coverdell has consistently voted against Georgia families on the key issues,” said Coles. “In 1997, Coverdell voted against funding for Peachcare, a program which will provide health insurance for 145,000 children of middle income Georgia families.” “The Business Roundtable is lying to the voters of Georgia when they claim Coverdell is a proponent of health care reform,” stated Coles. “He opposes a patient’s right to sue their HMO and has consistently voted to block any meaningful health care reform in the Senate even proposals from his own party.” “Don’t be fooled by the innocent nature of this new ad. The Business Roundtable, who sponsored the ad, is comprised of insurance executives just like Coverdell, who have strongly backed his attempt to block health care reform in this country,” stated Coles. “They want to send him back to Washington because they know he will continue to look out for the insurance industry, not the families of Georgia.” “Coverdell’s re-election effort depends upon people buying into the lies he continues to spread on TV,” continued Coles. “It is my mission to make sure that everyone in Georgia knows that he has worked hard to hurt Georgia’s children and Georgia’s families by opposing programs like Peachcare.” # # # |
