KENNESSAW, GA -- Today, Georgia businessman and philanthropist Michael Coles released the following statement regarding his intentions in the race to replace Newt Gingrich in Georgia’s sixth congressional district: “Over the past several weeks, I have been flattered by the hundreds of friends and supporters who have encouraged me to run for the congressional seat being vacated by Speaker Gingrich. The faxes, phone calls, letters and emails have been overwhelming and Donna and I are truly appreciative of the support. “My family and I have discussed the possibility seriously because I believe that Georgia’s families deserve someone who will fight for them in Washington. Working to achieve real health care reform, restoring veterans’ benefits, protecting our environment, improving public education and reducing the tax burden on families throughout the sixth district and the state are all important issues for me and not simply campaign promises. However, at this time I feel that I can do more as a private citizen than as a candidate for political office to affect the change that is needed. “Therefore, I have decided not to run for Georgia’s sixth congressional seat. I hope that all the candidates for the seat will talk about the issues that are important to the families of the sixth district and will focus their energies toward solving the real problems that still exist. I will certainly be watching to make sure that they do. “Finally, let me say thank you to the hundreds of people who have encouraged me to run and offered their support -- both personal and financial. It means a great deal to my family and me. We appreciate it more than you could ever know. “Donna, my children and I wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.” |
