The Real Story

Paul Coverdell: Willing to Do “Whatever It Takes” to Hide from His Own Record

ATLANTA, GA -- Today, Michael Coles, candidate for United States Senate, refuted more lies spread by Paul Coverdell concerning their respective positions on HMO reform.  Coverdell’s claims, which refer to Coles’ HMO ad featuring Jodi Garrison, were made in a new television advertisement.

“In yet another lie to the voters of Georgia, Paul Coverdell has proven again that he will do ‘whatever it takes’ to avoid talking about his record on HMO reform,” stated Coles.  “I, on the other hand, will do ‘whatever it takes’ to make sure that the families of Georgia have the right to sue their HMO or insurance carrier if they are denied the treatment they need -- a right that Coverdell has.”

“Coverdell just doesn’t get it, tragedies like Jodi Garrison’s are not only true, but they happen all too often,” Coles continued.  “If Coverdell needs to ignore the reality of these HMO horror stories in order to justify his record in his own mind then that explains his new ad.”

“Despite Coverdell’s efforts to hide from his own record, the issue is simple,” stated Coles.  “Paul Coverdell has the right to sue his health insurance carrier but the families of Georgia do not.”

“Insurance salesman Paul Coverdell continues to side with the insurance industry by denying everyday citizens the right to sue their HMO,” Coles stated.  “Unlike Coverdell, I am on the side of the families of Georgia, who deserve the same health care rights as Paul Coverdell.”

Here’s the Real Story:

Coverdell’s Claim: “Coles is trying to make political gain out of the death of an infant.  His negative ad is not true.”

  • Fact: The Coles ad featuring Jodi Garrison, the woman from Jackson County who lost her child, states that “Paul Coverdell voted against the right to sue HMOs for these terrible tragedies.”  Paul Coverdell did vote against giving Georgians the right to sue HMOs for medical malpractice.  And the legislation that he now cites in his ad would not give 125 million Americans the right to sue HMOS for medical malpractice.  [Source: Congressional Record, 4/2/98, Vote # 73;  Associated Press, “GOP health care legislation drafted,” 7/15/98]

Coverdell’s Claim: “Coverdell is the co-sponsor of legislation that protects your right to choose your own doctor.”

  • Fact:  Although Senate Repubicans have proposed election-year health care legislation, they have never bothered to vote on it, and with only days left in the legislative session, it is unlikely to ever become law.   Fortunately, because of state laws, 95% of Georgians in HMOs already have the right to choose their own doctor.  [Source: Atlanta Journal & Constitution, “Would-be governors tackle managed care,” Walston, 5/3/98; Congressional Record.]

Coverdell’s Claim: “Coverdell is the co-sponsor of legislation that ensures your right to get whatever treatment you need.”

  • Fact:  The legislation that Coverdell supports (S. 2330) applies only to health plans “in which employers directly assume the financial risk for workers’ medical care”  -- people who work for very large corporations such as General Motors.  It does not provide meaningful protections to 100 million Americans who get health care coverage from insurance companies or HMOs.  [Source: New York Times, “Senate Republicans introduce their own bill to protect patients’ rights,” 7/16/98]
