The Real Story

Playing both sides: Coverdell touts himself as Education Hero despite Voting to cut $50 billion from Education

Atlanta, GA Today, United States Senate candidate Michael Coles, responded to a new radio advertisement from the Coverdell campaign.  The advertisement refers to the recent passage of a $260 million literacy assistance program supported by Coverdell.

“I am in favor any legislation, including literacy programs, which creates opportunity for our children,” stated Coles.  “Unfortunately, it seems that Coverdell only tries to improve public education two weeks out of the year the final two weeks of an election.”

“Its important to remember that during his first term, Paul Coverdell has done more to undermine public education than to improve it.  In 1995, Paul Coverdell voted to cut federal funding for education by $50 billion, which included cuts to literacy programs,”continued Coles.  “Voting to put back a few million after voting to cut tens of billions from our education budget does not even begin to make up for Coverdell’s shameful record on education.”

“It’s too bad that Paul Coverdell is more concerned with election year politics than he is with the future of our public schools,” stated Coles.  “Unlike Coverdell, I will make education one of my top priorities every day in the United States Senate.”
