The Real Story

Pardon Us, Mr. Coverdell: What Part of Your Voting Record do You Not Understand?

ATLANTA, GA - In his latest attack ad against Michael Coles, Paul Coverdell sounds like the fabled boy who cried wolf, under the impression that if he lies often enough someone in Georgia will finally believe his lies.  Now, Coverdell actually thinks that Gerogia's senior citizens will believe his outrageous lies about Michael Coles and moreover, believe his denials about his own voting record.

The facts of Paul Coverdell's Medicare voting record are indisputable:

  • Paul Coverdell was a key player in the effort to raise premiums and cut benefits for Medicare beneficiaries by $270 billion.1

  • In fact, Coverdell was the focus of an article in the National Journal in which fellow Republicans lauded Coverdell's leadership role in the effort to cut Medicare.2

And what about Paul Coverdell's own statements and voting record on Social Security?

  • Coverdell provided an interview to conservative columnist Mona Charen touting his idea for "phasing out social security."3

  • Just six months ago, Coverdell voted to partially privatize Social Security.4

So who are Georgians going to believe?

  • Paul Coverdell's paid actress?

  • Paul Coverdell's paid consultants?

  • Paul Coverdell's denials that come one week prior to an election?

OR

  • A conservative columnist, Mona Charen, who reported that Coverdell wanted to phase out Social Security, and never retracted the story?

  • The conservative magazine, National Journal, which quotes Coverdell's own colleagues about his leadership role in the fight to cut Medicare, and never retracted the story?

  • Coverdell's own voting record that is indisputable, and cannot be retracted?

Finally, you should check out Michael Coles' 1998 response to the AARP Voters' Guide.  It clearly states Michael's position on protecting social security and Medicare.

Paul Coverdell's lies are catching up with him.  "What goes around, come around, Paul," said Michael Coles.  "You cannot continue to lie to the voters of Georgia and expect that they will continue to believe the tales you are spinning.  It's like the boy who cried wolf," Coles stated.  "After listening to Paul Coverdell's false cries of foul enough times, they will turn away from his negative attacks and lies and vote for the candidate who will fight for them in the U.S. Senate."
