Paul Coverdell is NO friend of Georgia’s Veterans!

HIS RECORD:

  • 1993: Coverdell is one of only 27 Senators who votes to cut spending on new VA inpatient facilities.1
  • 1994: Coverdell is one of 31 Senators who votes to deny veterans a cost of living increase for their pensions.2
  • 1996: Coverdell votes to freeze veterans’ benefits for five years in order to pay for a $122 billion tax cut.3
  • April 2, 1998: Coverdell votes to boost highway and mass transit spending by eliminating medical care for veterans with smoking-related illnesses, cutting veterans health benefits by $17 billion.4
  • June 25, 1998: Coverdell votes against an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill that would have restored $329 million to VA health care programs depleted by earlier cuts.5
  • July 8. 1998: Coverdell casts the deciding vote against a point of order that would have restored $17 billion to medical care for veterans with smoking-related illnesses. The point of order is supported by a bipartisan coalition of Senators, including war hero John McCain and Georgia’s Max Cleland, who lost two legs and an arm in Vietnam. But the measure is defeated 50 to 48.6

I believe in tax cuts, a balanced budget, and improving our nation’s transportation system, but I do not believe the fiscal burden of these policies should be borne on the backs of our veterans.
