Voter Qualifications

To register to vote in Georgia, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • A legal resident of Georgia and of the county in which you want to vote
  • At least 18 years old by the day of the election

You cannot register to vote if you are:

  • Serving any sentence imposed by the conviction of a felony
  • Judicially determined to be mentally incompetent

Registering to Vote

You can register:

  • by mail
  • when you renew your driver's license

Get a mail-in form from:

  • The registrar's office for your county (visit or call -- get the number for your registrar here)
  • Any election office
  • Most public libraries
  • Most schools

If you are a student, you can also register by filling out the appropriate forms at one of these two locations at your school:

  • The Office of the Registrar
  • The Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs

Voting

Your registrar's office will assign you to a polling place in your precinct. If you're not sure about your polling place, call your registrar. You can look up your registrar's telephone number here. You can also contact your registrar to find out about:

  • The hours that the polls will be open
  • The availability of sample ballots before an election

Absentee Voting

If you cannot vote in person, you may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot.  You can vote by absentee ballot if:

  • You will be absent on the day of the election from your precinct during the entire period in which the polls are open.
  • You are 75 years or older.
  • You have a physical disability which prevents you from voting in person.
  • You are an election official.
  • You are observing a religious holiday which prevents you from voting in person.
  • You are required to remain on duty in your precinct for the protection of life, health, or safety of the public. (Police officers, firefighters, emergency personnel.)

You must apply for an absentee ballot through the registrar's office for your county.  Contact that office for details -- get the phone number for your registrar here.
