Friends, They say that close only counts in horseshoes. I beg to differ. In a campaign, close counts if the public interest is enhanced by the debate. Close counts if the issues presented over the course of the battle make a difference in the lives of voters.
Although the jury will be out for some time, I do believe the issues we raised caught the attention of my opponent, and helped define the agenda for races across the state. Hopefully our focus on the real problems of HMOs and health care will have an impact on the debate in Georgia in the months ahead. Our campaign stayed away from negative personal attacks, but we fairly pointed out where our opponent's actions and inaction on health care, veterans’ benefits, education, the environment, and social security hurt the average Georgian. For Donna and me, close also counts because this campaign gave us an opportunity to meet with so many Georgians throughout the state. And as important as the issues are, and victory is, it is the friendships formed and strengthened in the crucible of a campaign that are personally the most meaningful. My only regret is not being able over the course of the past year to adequately express my thanks for the support and confidence that you showed in me. Without your generosity we would not have been able to make our case. Let me simply say thank you. Although I have no plans to run again in the future, I do plan to stay active in making Georgia an even greater place to live and raise a family. It has been my good fortune to work toward this goal with you over the past year; let us make it our good fortune to continue to do so over the rest of our lifetimes. -- Michael |
